10 Things you must do before going to SSB interview

image

Once you receive a call letter for SSB interview, many of you wonder what things you must do before going and how to prepare for this crucial interview. Apart from pursuing coaching classes, studying SSB books and gathering information from several resources, there are still many significant tactics you need to consider in this preparation phase. SSB is not just about your intellectual but more of a personality assessment test that does not expect you to give predetermined answers.

Many SSB aspirants also study psychological tests and then give a very common expected answer which is why there is a high chance of rejection.

Make sure not to provide fake answers, rather try to adapt some changes in your personality and reach upto the standards of an Armed Forces Officer.

Following are the 10 must things to do before going for the SSB interview to help you crack it effectively.

Prepare a Schedule: Make sure you frame a time-table where you systematically mention all the to-do-list mentioned below and perform them before going for the SSB interview. Try to follow this schedule strictly as much as you can.

Physical Health: Take out half an hour in the morning for physical exercises and also try to do some yoga. This will make your body more endurable and physically fit. Further, this will avoid rejection due to medical conditions. During SSB interview, the training days might go smoothly if you are physically healthy and happy. \

General Awareness: If you are not used to reading newspapers, make sure you start now. Read English Newspapers, make sure to take heed of both national as well as international affairs that are currently trending. Whenever you come across an unfamiliar English word, write it down and then note down its synonyms and antonyms.

Polishing your General Knowledge:Cannot emphasize this more but GK questions are also important in SSB interview. Do not underestimate this section. GK questions can be asked in the categories of current affairs, national news, International news, capitals of countries, ministers of countries, geographical knowledge, questions related to your interests or educational field, etc. Try to stay updated with the General Knowledge.

Gather Knowledge through TV:Fastest way to gain knowledge than newspapers, is the resource called Television. You can watch talk shows, debates, news, National Geographic Channel, Discovery channel, political channel like Lok Sabha, etc. You will get more knowledge about current affairs through television as compared to any other source.

Work on your Communication and Public-Speaking Skills: In different tests of SSB like PPDT, Personal interviews, etc. your communication and public-speaking skills will be tested. How well can you communicate under pressure, how confident are you in your responses, how is your behavior during Group discussions, everything will be monitored by the examiners. Before appearing for the interview, it is very important for you to work on your communication as well as public-speaking skills, especially when you have a shy personality. For this, you can try to arrange mock group discussions, go through mock interviews, practice different tests and arrange sessions to talk in front of the audience as well. Focus on correcting your pitch, volume, language and rhythm of speech.

Sports: Being good at sports and having proper knowledge about how it works is really considered significant in SSB. Certain questions might be asked regarding your favorite sports. And having interest in sports activities will also create a great impression on SSB examiner. Prepare for at least 2-3 sports and have some basic general knowledge regarding them. Sports will increase your endurance greatly and also enhance the quality of your PIQ. (Personal Information Questionnaire).

OLQs (Officer-Like Qualities): Not just faking during SSB interview, but start to inculcate values in your daily life before you appear for SSB interview. It will help you to naturally bring out your personality during the interview, rather than falsifying it. OLQs include courage, honesty, intelligence, expressiveness, confidence, etc. Hence, try to inculcate these values in your daily life and train your mind to think and act like an Armed forces officer.

Logical Reasoning: Go through several logical reasoning tests like verbal, non-verbal and other reasoning play offs so that your brain gets more active and alert. These logical reasoning tests force your mind to work and think in a certain way. And so, you will be more attentive and focused during the actual SSB interview as well.

Practice Optimism: One thing that will certainly get you rejected in an SSB interview is a pessimistic approach. Whenever you are asked certain questions or put through certain situations in SSB interview, examiners are trying to figure out your personality assets. If your overall behavior comes out to be pessimistic, you are more likely to get rejected in the tests. Always try to stay positive and have an optimistic approach towards things. It won’t happen magically in the SSB interview but you have to practice positivity and bring those vibes into your life before you appear for the interview. Eventually, this will boost your confidence and portrait your personality better.

Work on your personality assets thoroughly, rather than practicing TATs and other such tests, because once you get selected, there’s no story writing or word sentencing into picture. Apart from all the above-mentioned to-do-things, I would also suggest you to learn the technique of PIQ form filling. Avoid stating unnecessary and inappropriate details, rather state authentic facts.

Not just that, also read your resume properly, dress up neat and tidily for the interview. Being optimistic does not mean that you to behave very casually during the tests or personal interview. Sit straight and portray mannerisms through your behavior that shows you are serious about getting selected into Armed Forces of India. Moreover, avoid having a cynical approach, unfriendly behavior, too much stammering/stuttering, faking answers or trying to paint a false picture, etc. Be honest, sincere, confident and cheerful in your behavior as well as appearance.

Tips for solving TAT and PPDT : SSB Interview

Writing a good story in PPDT and thematic apperception test [TAT] is very important as it defines your screening result and psychology test result respectively. Some of you think that even though your story was good, you didn’t get selected. What is the reason behind that? the reason is some of us don’t know what to write and we write what we think is awesome, unfortunately assessor don’t like your story though it was amazing according to you.

Now a psychologist can only help you regarding this, after many requests from the followers of this blog we are presenting you some useful information regarding ” How to write story in TAT ” We are thankful to Krishna Nair, Consulting Jr Psychologist (Behavioral Psychology)Human Behaviour and Inter-Personal Relationshipsand and Anoop T. Unnikrishnan Counselling and Psychotherapy for providing us useful information regarding TAT.

The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT)

The Thematic Apperception Test (TAT) gives an opportunity in the form of a Stimulus to the individual to project his personality in terms of free verbal Responses with regard to the pictures, he sees and the plot that he may weave around the picture. It is not a fact based test, rather it is based on opinion, emotions, value and attitude of the person. What color and
combination are given to the story, which aspects are dominated, does the individual show value, emotions, helping attitude, sacrifice, faithfulness with full of challenges, is all seen through this test. For these aspects, one is required to go beyond the obvious. Going beyond the obvious will enhance the imagination process and imagination has no prescriptional limit. It is well said Your Imagination can take you places, which you can’t even imagine!
TAT- What, Why and How? TAT is purely based on your Perception. So far as the definition goes . Perception – It is the process by which individuals organize and interpret their sensory impressions in order to give meaning to their environment.
TAT basically requires you to perceive a Thema or Story. The story requires a Hero, who must face challenges and risk, but should not fail. Depending on the situational crisis, the hero may face the failure for time being, but finally he should succeed. There is no Courage without challenges and risks; there is no Motivation without failure and setbacks.

Basic Requirement In TAT and PPDT Stories

There should be a match between you and your hero, because the hero is your alter-ego, your deployed leader who should represent you 100%. There must be a minimum distance between you and your hero. There should be a similarity between age, sex and character. There may be a possibility of difference in perception, emotions and ability, but not in terms of the achievement. To be precise, your hero’s achievement is the manifest of your own achievement.

10 Tips for better running and fast recovering

How many times have you gone out for a run and felt like your legs were made of concrete, or worse? Surprisingly, they might not feel so bad from something that you did as from something that you didn’t do. Treat your legs well between runs to gain more enjoyment from your workouts, increase performance, and speed up recovery time.

Before Running:

1. If you eat a large meal before a run, wait at least three hours before you head out. Almost nothing you eat immediately before a run will digest enough to give you energy during your run. If you do have to eat, choose something your system can easily absorb, such as a banana, a few spoonfuls of peanut butter or honey, or a handful of dried fruit.

2. Drink at least 8 oz. of water a half hour before heading out to prevent dehydration. If you’re going for longer than a 10K, you might consider taking a water bottle or planning a route that has a water stop along the way. Staying hydrated will keep your legs from cramping, especially in hot weather.

3. You may be tempted to do intense stretching to get warmed up, but try Chi Running Body Looseners instead. Ankle rolls, hip rotations, and knee circles are a few gentle exercises you can do to get your body loose and relaxed without straining cold muscles and joints. See the Chi Running book or DVD for a detailed explanation.

4. Begin your runs with a very relaxed and easy stride – not too fast. Increase your pace slowly until you’re running at your desired level. If you start off too fast, you risk running out of gas early in your run, and you’ll feel more soreness in your legs afterwards.

5. Track the mileage on your shoes. At about 500 miles, mid-soles can become too compressed to return to their original shape between runs, and your feet and legs will begin to notice. Be sure to replace your shoes regularly.

After Running:

6. After a three to five minute cool down jog, stretch thoroughly. Don’t just jump back into your car and head off to your next event, or you could be walking around with tight legs for the rest of the day. Doing a cool down and stretching period allows the lactic acid (the byproduct created by your muscles) to be flushed out into your bloodstream and eliminated from your body.

7. Take a hot bath or relax in a hot tub after your workout if you can. Soaking your legs warms your muscles and relaxes them back into their normal shapes. A shower doesn’t work as well, unfortunately, but it’s still good for your legs if a bath is out of the question.

8. Do “leg drains” by lying on your back with your legs extended vertically and feet propped against a wall for three to four minutes. This drains the blood out of your legs so fresh, clean blood can be pumped back into them when you stand up. You can do leg drains either immediately after stretching or after your bath. Either way, you’ll notice a markedly different pair of legs under you when you get up.

9. If you’ve just done a strenuous workout, one of your next two meals should be a solid protein meal, which helps your muscles rebuild themselves. Add a hearty green salad and fresh vegetables to replenish your system with valuable minerals.

10. Whether or not you’re a regular runner, you should be drinking water all day long. Eight to 10 glasses of water spread throughout the day will replenish the fluid lost to exercise. Don’t drink your water all at once; just keep an even flow going.

Tips for Group Discussion & Personal Interview

Tips for Personal Interview

  1. Don’t start with the phrase – Myself XYZ – there’s no better way ti put the panel off.
  2. Getting into details about siblings and cousins – especially the one who seem to have done well. Panelists want to know about you, not about your extended family.
  3. Don’t cite – ‘making friends’ or ‘meeting new people’ – as a hobby. Wonder how one pursues a hobby like ‘meeting new people’!
  4. Don’t say things like – I studied this in my first year – as an excuse for not knowing more basic stuff related to their subject of study. The panel members study this about 20 years back – they still remember about it.

There are a lot of advantages of a group discussion:

1.It helps to shed away the shyness of a candidate and brings his viewpoint amidst all.

2.It stimulates to think in a different, new way.

3.It helps the candidate in understanding his/ her own strengths and weaknesses.

4.It acts as an aid in expansion of the knowledge of the participant.

5.It helps to analyse the social or economic issues more logically.

Not just these, there are various other advantages to add on to. But, let us first have a glimpse of how to perform well in a group discussion.

Here is a list of what should be done and what should be avoided at a Group Discussion (GD)

1.Be as natural as possible. Do not try to be someone you are not. Be yourself. In an attempt to be someone else, your opinions will not be portrayed.

2.Sit with a straight and confident posture.

3.Be assertive yet humble. You need to stick to your values and beliefs, but learn to respect the values and opinions of others too.

4.Grab the opportunity to speak first, i.e. to start the group discussion with your opinion. It generally leaves a good impression on the evaluator, but take the move only if you have complete knowledge of the subject.

5.Do not repeat a point, or be lengthy or irrelevant. Also intervene, if someone else is going on an irrelevant track.

6.Facilitate contribution from others. Do not just go on and on and on with only your opinionated view. Remember, it is a group discussion. Allow others to speak too.

7.Make an eye contact with all the participants. It creates more room for conversation. Also keep nodding, when others speak, it shows receptivity.

8.Be an active and dynamic participant. The examiner wants to hear you speak. So do put forth your views.

9.Be positive and prepare your thoughts well but do not be over-confident.

10.Think well before you speak. You are being heard and judged upon.

11.When raising an objection to a point kept by another speaker, back it up with a solid reason to get the point across.

12.Use quotes, facts and figures, statements, everyday life examples to express a clear chain of thoughts. Also it might leave a good impression on the examiner and help you score well.

These are some basic yet very vital tips that will help you feel a bit more confident about yourself and make you ready to appear for that group discussion trend.

Most viewed TAT and PPDT writing tips: SSB Interview

TAT Thematic Apperception Test is the first test of phase-2 screening. It contains 11+1 pictures. The first 11 pictures contain a series of slides on which you’ll have to write stories on. And the last slide will be a blank slide out of which you can write any story but make sure the story will have your life experiences or problems you have faced and how you overcame those problems. One gets 30 second to see the picture and then 4 minutes for writing a story around it.

TAT and PPDT Story Writing Tips

It’s not a test for beauty of expressions, so, do not use heavy-duty words and do not try to over show your ideas through writing. You just have to make a story around the picture.

The psychologist will test your personality using TAT, WAT, SRT, and self description.

All the tests are used for analyzing your personality and to check whether you have officers like quality.

Always remember, the answers of TAT, WAT, SRT and self description are compared with one another to find out the real personality of the candidate.

I am taking an example so that I can help you to understand how to make story out of the picture.

Picture Interpretation

What I can see in the picture is an old lady age of around 45-50 who is lying on the bed looking gaunt and a boy of around 20-22 age group. The boy looks in positive or neutral mode. The background looks like inside a house.

Story Idea

Person Y is a boy of 22 and he was keenly interested in social help. He started to take tuition of all the street children who used to live in the nearby. One day he visited one of his students’ houses and found out his mother was sick. So he quickly with the help of some people took her to the hospital where she was treated and became fine.        Or

Person Y is a boy of 22 and he was average boy who is very fond of outdoor games and exercise. One day his friend’s mother fell in their house and hurt herself. She was diagnosed with a hair line fracture and was advised to bed rest. So Y helped his friend in his studies and his household work and helped his mother in exercise to revive.

Interpretation of the story

The hero of the story undertook the challenge, the hero has a sense of responsibility for his society and he doing something to make a change in his surroundings.

His punctuality, dedication and schedule reveal his planning and organizing ability.
